i'm at work trying to latch onto the signal but the router is having issues. the computers are directly hooked up to a local area connection, is there any way i can somehow get a connection from that?

None that the IT people at work would allow you to do.

The router would need to provide a WiFi signal unless you can find a way to hook your phone to a lan jack. If there isn't a wifi signal there is not a lot you can do when it isn't your network.

If you do not know what the word LAN means you are in big trouble trying to set this up. If there is no WiFi network you can just connect to then you will need to ask the IT dept for help. When you do not even know basic networking terms you will have no ability to setup your own wireless.
