Hi,

I have a ~10 month old computer I built myself at the end of last year consisting of the following:

  • Antec High Current 850W Modular HCG-850M power supply
  • Intel i7 4770 cpu
  • XFX Radeon 290 gpu
  • 2x 8gb G-Skill Trident F3-2133C9D-16GTX DDR3 ram
  • ASRock Z87 extreme6 motherboard
  • 1x ssd (boot drive), 1x hdd, 1x cd drive

  • Earlier today when I tried starting up a game my computer blackscreened and the power button stopped responding.

I am used to black-screens in the past due to the related R9 290 issues which I resolved about a month ago using an experimental driver version, because of this past experience with blackscreens I didn't think too much about it at the time.

Now however, when I turn on my computer I get no signal out (Screens stay in standby mode) and the GPU + CPU fans don't start spinning. My harddrive will spin up and my PSU/Case fans (Plugged direct into the PSU) will run. The computer also fails to sound off it's startup beeps and the hard-drive spins down shortly after starting up. The onboard "Dr. debug" led panel that comes as part of the motherboard also fails to light up.

Strangely my usb ports all receive power when the computer is turned on but the power button only turns on the computer and has no effect once the computer is running regardless of how long you hold it down.

So far the only thing I've really tried to fix this is to pull out the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then replace it which has unfortunately made no difference.

Does anyone have any other basic troubleshooting ideas I can try before pulling it to pieces and breadboarding or just sending parts back under warranty? Or even some concept as to how this may have happened (I was launching Star Citizen off of an SSD for the first time, formerly it was run from my HDD and worked perfectly.)

Try removing the gpu and using the onboard graphics just to see if it will boot properly.

I have played around a bit with my computer over the past day or so, starting with removing my gpu.
For some reason the computer boots up perfectly fine without the gpu but once I plugged it in again the computer booted fine.

At this point I assumed everything was fine and that something had just come loose when the computer was running. Unfortunately when I next tried to start up my computer I came across the exact same problem I originally had, with the same solution.

I currently have to fully unplug my gpu, boot the computer and then power it down, plug the gpu back in and boot the computer once more to get it to start properly.

Try using a different set of pcie power leads from the psu to the gpu. Also try using different "out" ports from the psu to the gpu. Do you have a second rig where you can try the gpu, or perhaps try it on a friends rig?

What we are trying to do is isolate the root cause by eliminating the various componets.
