I have a dual booted System that runs Windows XP (which I need to run specific software) alongside my Ubuntu 14.04. My windows installation cannot connect to the internet although Ubuntu on the same machine does. what do I need to do to change the Windows XP settings to enable it to go on line or join my ubuntu network

You need to set up an ethernet connection in xp (in network connections). Use THIS as a guide.

Hi Thank you, this is more or less what Ms XP tells one to do, but it doesn't work, I know that the computer is physically connected to my router by cable as the Ubuntu 14.04 installation is on the same hardware and connects perfectly (otherwise I wouldn't be able to contact you). But for some reason Windows XP claims there is no Internet connection. and doesn't permit any changes to be made, that I can see.

In xp, go to device manager and check your lan devices for driver issues (yellow exclamation mark). The drivers used for linux are self contained in the linux o/s and are different from the ones used by xp,
