Hello all,

I'm in the process of building a micro-atx gaming pc and had settled on a Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290 for my graphics muscle.

My only question is as per the title.

The vendor I'm planning on using shows a massive price difference between the two atm
http://
€318 vs €407 for what appears to be a 30MHz difference
I'm not 100% sure if the price cuts due to nVidia 970/980 have hit or not but I'd like to know what the difference is between the 2 cards

More about : sapphire vapor 290 standard version

I'd get the Tri-X or I already have it and very happy with its performance , runs cool and overclocks well.

No need to pay a premium for the Vapor-X.

The difference is not merely of 30Mhz core clock but cooler design, PCB and VRAM type as well. But, you get MSI GTX 970 for 370 Euros, which'd outperform both the cards. The advantages of 970 over 290:
Less TDP.
More power.
Less coslty than OC version.

Check up some benchmarks, 970 will be my recommendation.

The only 970's I can find available are around the €390 price point.
Additionally all those benchmarks are vs reference 290's and show a couple of FPS difference aggregate, the 290 Vapor-x OC benchmarks closer to a reference 290x, which is why I'm interested to know the performance of the other card in the link above.

The other reason I chose a 290 is because I will be using this system to do a fair bit of 3D CAD. Which is one area where the the Hawaii cards soundly trumped the 780's, I can't imagine the 9xx series have improved that much.

I was talking about this gaming beast:

Well yes the difference is not much, both can max out titles, you'll get some more frames with 970. You're aware of the other benefits I assume.

Also, yes, AMD doesn't lock its drivers for gaming oriented purpose like Nvidia, so you may reason that out for a good buy. Mind you, in gaming, no matter what version you take, and how much you OC, 970 still wins, simply due to better performance, but yes CAD is a good reason to go R9.
