Can anyone help me out with the parts and some guides on how to build a 400 dollar gaming computer? I have never owned a gaming PC before and have been playing off of my crappy laptop. I don't need the computer to be really good and run things on max settings just need something that will play games like minecraft and tf2 without any lag. I also need the computer to be reliable. Thanks for your help!

The I3 could be dropped for a Pentium to reduce budget. Also if he needs an OS he's screwed moneywise with that build.

I recommend his build up there, but I would tweak it to have 2x2GB 1333mhz (minimum) instead, because having only one stick can hinder the build.

If $400 is your limit then this is a good enough gaming build too:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-E33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($47.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($33.81 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital RE3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($46.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: PNY GeForce GTX 650 1GB Video Card ($62.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Rosewill FBM-01 MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($19.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 430W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply ($24.99 @ NCIX US)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($89.98 @ OutletPC)
Keyboard: Gigabyte KM5300 Wired Standard Keyboard w/Optical Mouse ($8.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $405.71
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Here is the problem with $400, you also need the following.

A Display Used $60ish New $99 or more
Keyboard/ Mouse $10-$20
A copy of WinBlows $68 for Cappy OEM or $98+ for something your can reuse or reinstall without going through the ringer.
Here is half of your budget.

Building the rest of the system for $200... not going to get you much more than your laptop. Used parts could help and if your interested in that route let me know and I will post what I find. Personally I would suggest your save your money and start at around the $650 mark that makes things much easier and a system that in more enjoyable.

Pentium G3258 + Nvidia GTX650 are good enough for playable FPS in almost any game w/ low/med settings.
A $400 complete gaming build is possible :D
