Hello, I was wondering how the red light knows that a drive has gone bad on a server. Where is this information coming from? Does the expander read SMART info from the drive?

Thanks in advance

That's going to depend on which server and where the red light is. Can you provide more details?

The controller is intelligent enough to know that the drive is not communicating at all or too slowly, or the drive itself is reporting enough errors to be flagged for replacement (as in SMART errors).

So how would one go about creating this red light?

I am looking to take an existing pc and add this capability so i can visually see if the drive is bad or not.

You won't be able to do this with a motherbd controller easily.

It looks to be a function of the backplane and not the motherboard. maybe this isnt the right place to ask

Depends on the controller & drive bay(s). The signal comes from the controller. The backplane may light the led or the led could even be integrated onto the controller like on the IBM M1015. I haven't seen an intelligent backplane yet, at least not with sata/sas. They are basically just 'breakout cables' on a board for easy drive mounting. Also keep in mind that larger raid array enclosures usually have an HBA controller in them to breakout the raid controllers port to multiple ports.
