60Hz VS 144Hz w/R9 290

My friend and I were having an argument the other day about the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz.

He said the difference between them would be very small, if any, and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless you were, let's say, driving a car really fast or spinning in circles.

I said that the 125% increase in refresh rate would be very noticeable, especially with the R9 290 I have, and it would be worth the extra money.

Are there any people out there with 144Hz/120Hz monitors that can tell me their honest and unbiased opinion of weather or not it's worth it?

Solution
If your framerate is substantially higher than 60fps, then yes you can notice a difference with a high speed monitor.

But the higher you go, like between 120fps and 144fps, it becomes practically indistinguishable to the human eye. At those framerates the image moves butter smooth (assuming you have a high speed monitor to see it)
The R9 is capable of delivering those framerates , however the experience differs from one person to another.

For me , I couldn't really tell the difference as I didn't notice it right away till my friend told me that's a 144hz monitor.

It feels smoother but not something I'd get right now , that's my personal opinion and this opinion will differ from one person to another.

This is an extremely mixed topic. Linustechtips did an experiment and his gaming friend couldn't tell the difference. Give me the choice of 1920x1080 144Hz or 2560x1440p 60Hz and I'd take the 1440p. That is where the real definition difference stands out.

With that said, I do notice a huge difference between 40 and 60fps, but if the internet is excellent then things seem smooth.

I wouldn't recommend getting a 144Hz monitor. The price is double that of a 60Hz and the resolution is the same.

Yes BUT That's not what I asked. The cheapest 1440p monitor I could find was 100 dollars more than the 144hz 1080p monitor, and I would get it if my budget allowed it. Do you have a 144hz monitor that you can tell me, with experience, is better/the same? If you don't have one then the question wasn't directed at you. I only want the personal experiences of people who have actually owned and used one.
