Selling or keeping? 770 vs 970

Hey everyone, I have a (probably once in a lifetime) chance to sell my gtx 770 2gb for $200 dollars.
That was without a doubt the reason why I put it in Craigslist in the first place.
But now that I think about it, is that really the most convenient thing to do?
The reason why I'm selling is so I can get my hands into the beautiful GTX 970 Gigabyte G1... But If I were to sell my card today, I wouldn't be able to buy the G1 today, or tomorrow or at all, since it is out of stock and neither NewEggs, TigerDirect or Amazon have any idea when they'll get more in.
As the matter of fact almost every other card or every seller is out of stock as well. There are simple no 970's out there.

So here is the question. Should I sell my 770 and wait a month or two to get my 970 if I pre-order it today? Or should I hold to my 770 and when the 970 finally get's in stock I'll hope for a miracle again and try to sell it then?

sell the 770 if you think you cant find a deal again when mire 970's release... its best to be prepared hen the cards is back rather than thinking about selling when it reaches again and at the rate these cards are moving you will probably be out again when you get the sale for the 770 .. sell the 770 while you have the chance

In what resolution are u playing? if its 1080p ur 770 is still very capable card.. if u think that 10-20 fps more worth paying 200$ extra then its up to you.. I got a r9 280x but for me paying a 200 euros more isnt justifying the price..

Hi MadMarch2.

What is the going rate for a used 770?

If you keep checking every few hours you can probably find a 970. That is what I ended up doing and got one.

If for example you're using NewEgg- refresh the screen on the card you want, but do it with a control + F5.

For me it kept showing out of stock, did a control + f5 and it let me buy it.

If you can live w/o any games for a few days/weeks, then sell it ASAP.

If you're only getting $50 over the going rate, hold on to it. Think of it as a convenience fee :)

IF you have a single 1080p 60hz monitor keep your 770 until later in 2015 when Nvidia shrinks Maxwell down to 20nm or 16nm or whatever. The 770 has the perfect amount of power for 1080p 60hz.

I went through the same dilemma when the 970 launched. I bought a 970 and tested it for a few days before I returned it for a full refund. The card's performance was a solid 15-20% more FPS than my OC'd 770. And all that performance was wasted on my 60 hz 1080p monitor. The only noticeable difference was in Crysis 3 - which I don't play bc the game sucks, I only have it to test performance LOL.

I play on an 1080p 60hz. I do understand that the 970 is a little bit overkill but I'm getting scared of all the new games that are coming and have crazy requirements.
For Example Shadows or Mordor recommends 6Gb of Vram to play on ullta... The Evil Within wants 4Gb of VRam as recommended? O.O That's for the mid-high settings? O.O Thing is the money is an issue, I don't make much money and I have to save for some almost-certain expenses so throwing another 200 of my PC (which by the way I built early this year) kinda hurts my wallet.
I want to have the best experience for my money and if I'm paying full price for a game I wanted to look as good as it possibly can. I wish I could predict if the 770 will run them in high-ultra in 1080p. I mean the games are getting tougher and I'm scared that my little 770 won't be able to keep up and and I'd have to play in the minor leagues instead :/

no need to wrry just get a gtx 970 and all will be well ,, you wont have to worry for a little while longer ,, with the 970 you will have a stronger card than the 770 so you will be less like to face any stutter

The 970 is not overkill for 1080p.

For example, a 3 year old game, The Witcher 2, fully maxed out @ 1080p. The 970 cannot run this at 60fps. It will stutter a bit and drop down to around 50fps.

You can disable some options for constant 60fps, but it is still not capable of 1080p/60 @ ultra w/ full AA.

Same for Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, or Watch Dogs.

I just brought up all the 970s, and control + F5 refreshed my screen. Add to cart button showed up.

Also, if that is too expensive, hold off for a month or two. Maybe you can grab that Zotac for $329. Save yourself some cash.

The good thing is you're saving $200 by selling your 770.

My 770 runs Witcher 2 at 80+ FPS at ultra with ubersampling on. Also I've been playing shadow of mordor since launch date and with the Hd texture pack added my system run the game at 50-80 FPS with a mix of high and ultra settings. It stays ~80 fps except when it rains which is when it hovers at 50-55.

Use the GeForce experience to optimize your games. It's a lot more useful and comprehensive than people give it credit for.

I have my settings set 1 notch from Optimal which is 3 settings from Ultra max all settings with HD pack and the game runs perfect.

Save your money until next gen the 770 is perfectly fine with your monitor.

Ultra preset with ubersampling on. Even my 660 runs the game at 60 fps at ultra ever since the nvidia superdriver . May be try with only the menu presets or the GeForce experience. For me my "optimal" settings in the GE is maxed out all settings .
