Hello

My motherboard died so I got a new one, and since changing motherboard I get an error before windows boots "CPU Fan Error, Press F1 for setup" if I just go into BIOS then out again it boots but the error is concerning.

These are my specs for those interested:

Intel i7 4770k
8gb corsair vengeance ram
gigabyte nvidea 760 4gb
asus maximus vi hero motherboard
corsair rm850 watt power supply

The interesting thing is I turned my PC on with the door off and I can see the CPU fan spinning. Also it says on the BIOS fan monitor its spinning at 792 RPM which is good I thought? Also the CPU is only running at 35C in the BIOS and 45C when running Windows. Is there a problem? Because I can tell the BIOS not to check for this error but I'm a bit concerned there is a problem I'm missing. Thanks everyone!

Have you plugged the CPU fan into the assigned 'CPU_FAN' header on the board? What fan/cooler do you specifically have?

Yes that's where I plugged it in. The fan is the one that came with my intel i7 4770k. Hope this helps, thanks for replying so quickly.

No problem. Is the fan and heatsink free of dust? Did you replace the thermal compound when you changed over boards are reinstalled cpu + cooler?

I did yes i cleaned the processor with alcohol gel then reapplied new paste before putting the cpu fan back on. i put on about a pea sized blob in the middle of the processor then pushed down on it with the cpu fan. no dust that i can see but i'll take another look - do the temperatures seem normal to you?

45 seems a little high. 35 is ok. But then again its with stock cooler - with the 4770K you really want something a little better. In Windows try measuring temps using Coretemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

here you go buddy! http://imgur.com/WVm9FBg

thanks again for talking to me about this - getting your opinion is really helping. so you suggest i invest in a better cpu cooler? and in your experience do you think it would be unwise to ignore the cpu fan error message considering it seems to be running at somewhat ok temperatures?

Ok those temps look much more reasonable. Yes, I strongly suggest a new cooler. If you give your budget and you PC case (max cooler dimensions) then I can give you suggestions.

In terms of the fan error message. First try clearing the CMOS on your board - have a look at your manual for specific instructions. If this doesn't solve it then try contacting ASUS support just to see what they say. I'm not too sure if its safe to ignore it as it may limit some board functionality such as overclocking if it thinks the CPU fan isn't working properly.

Happy to help!

If I remember right there is a cpu_fan header and an opt_cpu_fan header (or something like that, there is an optional cpu fan header). If that's the case, confirm you aren't in the optional one. That could produce the error.

Second possibility, in your bios go into fan speed control, there will be an option for minimum fan speed. Set it down to 300 rpm or so and that should fix your problem (if I am on the right track).

Yep the clearing CMOS should also do the same trick because it loads optimised defaults and the stock cooler is certainly nothing special.

both good ideas thank you very much. will do.

yes i'd really appreciate your reccomendation if you have time. well space isnt really an issue as i have a huge case ^^ it's this one http://www.ebuyer.com/391898-fractal-design-define-r4-s... and money isnt really an issue either... this pc is my baby and i want to look after her haha!

Ah the R4....awesome case. These coolers will also allow for overclocking:

One of the best AIR coolers:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler (£64.90 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £64.90
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

(There is also the D15 model for a little more money if you want)

If you want to do more extreme overclocking:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (£78.88 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £78.88
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

setting it down to 300 rpm didnt help, still the same old error! but while i was in there i did notice this: http://imgur.com/OkLUEcc

the BIOS is recording the cpu fan speed as N/A even though i am watching it spin right now.... the plot thickens!

It worked! Thank you so much :D  no more error message every time i boot. Temperatures are still the same though so I will take your advice on the cooler. Want to say thanks one more time for all your advice tonight, helped no end. You're the man tambeshakunt.
