I have an ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard, it is an AM2+ socket, as far as I've read. I recently got this computer and I'm going to upgrade it. I'm not overly concerned about the cost, but no more than around $150 is nice.

I have heard rumor that you can put an AM3 processor in here? Is that true or no, and if yes, does it function at good enough capacity to make it worth doing? If I were to do this this, what kind of BIOS update would I need, and where can I find it?

Also, if there were an AM3 in it, then would I need to put DDR3 in the MOBO? It says it would take DDR2 at 1066MHZ, does that mean DDR3 at 1066MHZ.
(I have read this MOBO will take 8gb and 16gb from two different sources, any chance someone can clear this up?)

And lastly, regardless of the highest socket it will take, what's the best processor I can put in here? From what I've found, I can put the AMD Phenom II 995 Black Edition clocked at 3.2GHZ, and that's the highest I can put in for the AM2+ socket.

Any help and further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

its a board configuration and bios support thing you still have to check if your chip is listed on its support pages like the board I posted above there 2 ddr3 memory slots for the chips it supports for that memory and 2 ddr2 slots for the rest

you have to check the boards compatibility at all times
