hi hoorhay has question

Is about direct comparison in performance only, not what mobo goes with is more relevant. In gaming alone, and in cpu intensive games, which processor would hold back stronger graphics cards more. An old old c2q Q9400 or slightly newer dual core i5 650?

Q9400 has four logical core? But i5 almost same as it has 2 logical and 2 hyperthreaded? Would perform almost like quad core in things other than gaming? My main concern is gaming though, would i5 650 be marginally stronger? It would be my guess, but first generation i5 confuse me. If was Q9400 vs i7 920 I obvious pick i7. If first gen i3 I more likely pick Q9400, but not sure. Lean more to c2q there, but with i5 650 I'm thinking it out perform Q9400 and clock lots higher.

I am getting these cpu very cheap from friend, but wants $15 more for i5 650. Is worth?

GRATZE!!

thanks for advices

would r9-280 be bottleneck by this cpu? In less cpu intense game? I know Q9400 would hold back r9 280/7950 by little. Not sure 650

It depends on the game and resolution. If you already know the Q9400 would hold back r9 280/7950 by little, then you also know the faster i5-650 will hold it even less.

Okay, one more question then I give you best answer jejejeje

About how long you think first gen i5 remain kind of relevant? If I go this option for budget build, think I can maintain good performance with this build for next year?

i5-650(I've read can maybe overclock to 4.0GHz?)
16GB DDR3 4x4GB
r9 280 3GB
1X 1080p monitor

Would only need it to last little less than one year, then could upgrade processor and mobo again

If you run the same programs/games in a few years from now, they won't run any slower. More powerful processors are required when you buy new games or applications that are more CPU demanding. As an example, Office 2003 on an old Windows XP PC still runs as fast as it did 10 years ago, but it feels slow after using a much more powerful PC with an SSD. On the other hand, the old PC with an SSD feels much faster than it did with the old hard disk.

ahhhh update

friend also now just telling me he hath i5 2300 for $20 more cause he not know what to do with it. I know 2300 is a locked processor. If I overclock 650 to 4.0-4.3GHz I see better performance in games this next year than 2300? 2300 only turbo clock to 3.1GHz

You could overclock the i5-650, but you'll need to buy a good air cooler to achieve performance that matches the i5-2300. Are you buying a motherboard or will you get one with the CPU? Overclocking usually requires a more expensive motherboard.
