Alright, so here's my issue. my cpu randomly crashes and it seems to be linked to my usage of the internet, whether it's when I'm playing online games on steam, or watching videos on YouTube. I'm kind of nooby when it comes to pc's, and really need help. I'd give the specs of my machine if i knew how, which probably shows how much help i need. I've run my antivirus, and I've replaced my ram. the crashes are not blue screens or freezes, the CPU quits without warning and goes to a black screen in which i hear nothing but a single repeated sound. no idea if this helps but I've exhausted my limited knowledge on the matter. please help.

it read your hard ware info. then post it online from a free photo hosting site.
black screening pc most time is weak or bad power supply. if your pc is newish open the side panel up and read the info off of the power supply and see if the unit still under warranty.

Hi coldeyes6396 and welcome to Tom's Hardware
Thanks for the information you have supplied so far, Yes further information would help a lot
How old is your Computer?
What OS are you Running and Specs? hold Windows Key and Press E - right click on My Computer in the left pane and select Properties - this will list you PC info
The Repeated sound is it a Beep or a game sound repeating on a loop?
Does it Black Screen if not plugged into the internet?
Once we have some PC info we can further suggest some tests relevant for you to isolate likely causes.

Old Drivers can cause your issue - Update Sound, Lan And Video Drivers
- Reason old drivers may use out of date files which are not supported by Updates
- also windows updates for same reason above
Overheating - CPU, GFX, Dust, obstructions
- components become unstable when they overheat
Failing Hardware
- Check MB for Expanded Capacitors (google Expanded Capacitors for a visual ref)
Power Supply
- A old power Supply can cause this issue also, but not usually with looping sound unless its the pc Beep sounds
You have replaced Ram
- try Just 1 stick if your Using 2

the computer is made of pieces as old as 2000 and as new as last year. some of the pieces are from my uncle's old everquest playing machine. the sound isnt anything ive heard from my games or videos, it is low pitched and almost grindy sounding. granted, it hasnt crashed while doing anything without sound so i am unsure if it is an effect it is putting on the sounds, but it seems to be the same sound each time it crashes.

Keep an eye on speccy to see what the temps are doing
- As the system is warm but not overheating
When it does that sound again? lets try isolate it
1) Remove PC sound / turn off Speakers
2) Have case ready to open (side off or ready to slip off - is it the PC Speaker / HDD or something else?
- using a solid non metal object like a plastic or wooden ruler you can use it as a stethoscope to isolate noise
But start with updating drivers and applying windows patches/updates

Due to Age of Components you have checked for expanded Capacitors?
How it the Temps holding out?
A Sound Error usually point to Driver Issues
- if your Drivers are up to Date but the OS isn't the drivers and games are Using Files that have being updated, but older files in you OS referred to as DLL's (Dynamic Library Links) are code which is called on to be used to by the Driver if its an old File the instructions may no longer work correctly and cause issues as your experiencing
Test 1 - Start PC in Safe mode lots of stuff wont run as its a diagnostic mode
- Stress your PC IE Try make it Crash
- if you cant make it crash it very likely a Driver/File/DLL issue as described above
> Try Rolling Back your Sound Drivers...
- If it still Crashes -
Over heating / Failing Hardware / PSU... A power Fluctuation Can also cause this same issue - May be a Expander Capacitor dropping or leaking current or the Actual PSU fluctuating voltages

i just remembered an old problem i had that may be relevant to the situation. my action center seems to think i have a driver update for my graphic card, but when i tried to install the latest driver, it said it was up to date, could this be related? my temperatures are going up as i play, getting up to 80 or possibly more as i can see them lowering when i tab out to check. i checked for the capacitor issue, but i dont see any that look like they've split open. also have no clue what rolling back sound drivers means/is/are. and as far as stressing the PCIE, sorry im noob. no clue what that is.

Rolling Back Drivers...Or Fresh Install or Drivers
I would start with your Grafix Driver. "Fresh Install" - Select this option when running the driver software.
If still crashes.
1) uninstall Current driver from add/remove programs
- or from software supplier for GFX may have a specific uninstall tool
The term Roll Back... In Device Manager it has a Roll Back option
Press 'Windows' and 'E' , 'Right Click' in left Place 'My Computer' select 'Properties' top left Click 'Device Manager' Double click on Device.. IE Sound and the listed Sound Device, the Driver Tab - Button 'Roll Back Driver' if it not lit you cannot roll back driver this way.
The other option or Rolling back a driver is to uninstall it and install and older driver version - via add remove programs or above but select 'Uninstall Driver'
As for Testing Components...
Back up any important files before stress testing
Stress Testing your PC can help locate a faulting component or overheating issue
Tools Used for this are;
Prime95 - CPU
Furmark - GPU
Memtest86 - Ram
Stressing older hardware is not really the best option as it may finish off failing hardware.

It has now crashed while playing an offline game, right after the temperature jumped up to eighty. i then proceeded to look at my wallet and cry. With all the indicators that it is a temperature issue, i plan to get some canned air this week to clean it out and see if the problem persists. I know it isnt a permanent fix, but it would at least confirm that it is the temperature without stressing old components and possibly killing them, and maybe stall the issue long enough for me to make some money. thank you for all of your help, and i plan to update as soon as I have done that. again, thank you, i plan to use this site in the future as you have been extremely helpful.

Other ways to clean a PC with Clean dry Air
Foot bed Pump or single hand squeeze pump
Cons
Large attachments and some may be metal
Clumsy or not easy to use - meaning you could damage components
Hoses too short
Risk of heart attack due to exercise
Best Bet can of compressed air - as the only recommended way to clean PC's
I actually have a small hand pump ... works ok, but oh for a can of fresh compressed air

also due to the age of the pc the cpu tim paste may have gone bad and dried out. if you have a local micro center or look on newegg for small thermal paste tubes with free shipping.

Case air flow is an important factor of removing warm air so it does not get recycled around increasing system temps
Case location for adequate ventilation helps a tiny bit
Case fans have an arrow printed or etched/embossed on the actual fan showing direction of airflow.. or use a very technical instrument called a hand to feel air flow...
Front fans suck in air pushing air to the back of the PC. Rear fans push out air of the case
Also some motherboard have heat sinks surrounding the CPU so when you add ram causes a 1 Inch almost barrier meaning traditional fans that blow air down push hot air up and the cpu cooler pulls this hot air back into the cooling system
Here is an example http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww....
So a Standard Cooler and Fan will recycle hot air ... http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fregm...
You will need a Cooler like a Hyper 212 http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fmedi...
This cooler is HUGE, you need a fat case to put in it, but it's awesome. Require you to remove the MB to fit it correctly with a backing plate... there are cheaper knock off copies that also work well and fit like a traditional cooler
Wait hang on its your CPU temp that crashing your PC? Or GPU Graphics Card Temp?
Cooling a GFX card is a totally different story... but there are ways

Also worth mentioning that there is not a lot of room in the PC. and looking at your comment, i have recently added ram to the rig, and now have four sticks in it, as opposed to my previous 2. is that causing the problem you mentioned? if so, is there a smaller fan that would work for it? as mentioned, case is nearly full.

i know that my graphic card was overclocked at one point, but i believe that it was put back to normal long before it made it to my rig, and i have no clue how to overclock, so no worry of me screwing it up. if i were to check the bios, what would i do to find that out?
as for checking my PSU, i am staring at the motherboard page of speccy and i must be blind, can not see a PSU anywhere in it.

Good news, after cleaning the bugger out with canned air i got today, my temperatures are back down. games running smoothly, no crashes as of yet. i do plan to replace an unusable old fan in the back of the case to avoid this becoming a regular thing, but it seems that this has fixed my problem. i would like to thank the tom's hardware community, markkk especially for running me through things i thought i would never understand. i look forward to being an active member of the community as my knowledge of all things tech increases.

Lol -3 Ram that's awesome
Nothing to worry about it, not all info can be correctly obtained from every MB (could be what the controller is providing and what speccy has calculated incorrectly for your system)
Some MB Chip sets don't report voltages outside the bios screens, so programs don't have access to these extra features
Great to hear your system is running much better now
Chances are your GPU may still be over clocked.
Standard specs are http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Core 600mhz
Memory 1800mhz
Shader 1500mhz (from other websites)
You can use Overclocking tools to check current GFX Settings - (would not recommend to overclock more as you gfx is already running hot) if anything down clock it 10%
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/nvidia-inspector-do...
http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm
As for lower profile CPU Coolers http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/low-profile-heat-sink-min...
Measure your space from the top CPU to case edge (or from MB to top of case -10mm) to get an idea of what will fit
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cooling/2014/02/03/dee...
Its smaller than a hyper 212, Easy traditional mounting (no MB removal required)
http://www.deepcool.com/product/cpucooler/2013-12/7_120...
Both these are better than the Stock CPU Coolers supplied with Intel Processors
Some cases let you access the other side of the MB for access to the back CPU (so you don't have to remove everything to install larger coolers that require a CPU back-plate)
A friend with a Deepcool i5cpu temps from 37c - 68c under load
Previous intel cooler was 54c - 91c
