Hi all,

For the last few weeks I have been getting high ping every few seconds when playing games online. I think I have the problem narrowed down to my router/modem because i get the ping spikes when pinging it through command prompt. I have a Comcast Wireless Gateway 1 and at first I believed that the problem was just a faulty gateway, but after getting a replacement one, the problem persisted. This occurs on all of the devices in my house, I tested on two desktops, and two laptops with command prompt and got similar ping. This is the ping that I get when using command prompt.

The spikes seem to be random and will be anywhere from 100ms to 1000ms Someone please help me figure out what is wrong.

You are pinging the modem. So the problem is between your PC and modem.

Is it all devices?

If no, try a new cable to start and let us know if its all devices.

Does the same ping spike happen off network? like google.com? (74.125.224.72)

These are my ping times for google. Spikes still persist.

I was already pretty sure that it was a problem with the router. This happens on all of the computers i have at my house (2 desktops, 2 laptops) on both wired and wireless connections.

But you swapped the modem/router correct? Or do you have a router on top of the comcast equipment?

I use the gateway which comcast rents for use, no other modem/router. I got a replacement of the same gateway model after the problem started but it didn't change the problem at all.

Just to make sure its not your setup I would unplug or power off all comptuers but 1. Test again

Power off that computer and turn on a different computer. Test again.

If it does not work PM me and we can dig further into the issue.
