Question about my 780 ti SLI setup.

Hello. I received my second MSI 780 ti Gaming today and installed it. I tried running a few games on it so far and some seem to work very well with SLI but others are crashing. I've only tried a few games as I have just received the card today. The games that are working well so far seem to be older games like Crysis 3, Metro, and Tomb Raider. The two games that are not working with SLI so far are Dead Rising 3 and Titanfall. I will be doing more testing with different games but I'd hate to have to disable SLI every time I wanted to play certain games, not to mention I'd want SLI to work with them.

Anyway my question is about the temps and fan speed of the top card. When both cards are running at over 90% the top card reaches 80 degrees and as high as 86% fan speed and this is just after a few minutes of playing. The bottom card stays at 65 degrees. Do you think this is safe?
The cards have decent spacing between them on my mobo. Here's my build...

Case- Carbide 500R
Mobo- MSI G45 Z87 Gaming
CPU- i5 4670k
GPU- MSI 780 ti Gaming SLI
CPU Cooler- NH-D14
RAM- 8 Gig Gskill Ripjaw 1600
SSD- Samsung Pro 256
2X HDD
PSU- Seasonic X series 1050W Gold

Thank you

Dead Rising 3 is pretty buggy in general, and adding in SLI seems to make it worse. Titanfall is also another games that doesn't like SLI, but it is capped at 60 FPS so there really isn't a need for it with a 780 Ti.

80C is OK, but it will throttle if it goes any higher. Try using a custom fan profile with MSI Afterburner.

Hey man thanks for the reply. I just tried Shadow of Mordor with it and it works but it just doesn't make use of the second card at all. Atleast it doesn't crash lol. I played through all of Dead Rising 3 on just the one 780 ti and while it had a few bugs, it ran very well for the most part. The problem came when the screen filled up with zombies like 500 of them lol then the FPS would drop to low 40s and such still very playable though and I have Gsync :)
But I like to be atleast 60+ fps. Titanfall runs great on just one 780 ti you're right, the only time fps drops is when there is electric smoke or huge explosions but for the most part it runs perfect. I do wish that it worked with SLI though and was not capped to 60fps =/
So is this how it always is with SLI and Crossfire? Do they take a long time to get the support out for SLI? I know SLI support is supposed to be better than AMD's Crossfire and SLI in general is a better tech than Crossfire. I guess both companies take time to add support for SLI in new games =/

As for the temps. I think the throttle happens at 83 if I'm not mistaken. At full load and non SLI the card runs at around 70-72% atleast today it does. When it gets colder it will prob drop a few degrees but I wonder what will happen next summer when it becomes really hot again. I don't have an AC down here lol.

Anyway, what would the custom fan curve do for me? Currently, when the card reaches 80 degrees the fan is at about 80-85%.
Is this the normal temp for these cards in SLI?
Lastly, how long do you think the top card will survive if I play games and it runs that hot and the fans spin that fast? Obviously I won't be making it work like that 24/7 but still. I mean are the fans meant to work that hard and GPU run that hot?

It's normal for SLI 780 Ti's to run at this temp and fan speed. An aggressive custom fan profile will probably help, though.

SLI support is pretty good with most games today. It sometimes takes a while for a profile, though.

I think there is a way to use SLI in SoM, but I can't remember what it is. I think you have to manually enable SLI in the NVIDIA control panel, but I'm not sure.

I enabled SLI in control panel. It was disabled by default so I checked the box that said Maximize 3D performance and that's the only option I have there besides span displays with surround. I tried AC 4 black flag and FarCry 3 and they are running perfectly, it's so frikkin nice lol. Watch Dogs didn't work though =/ I don't know why the games that don't work with SLI are just crashing either. Atleast Mordor doesn't just crash like hte others. Ryse is another one I just tried and it crashes as well. The message I get is that I don't have enough memory lol and ask me if I want to change the color scheme. This happened to me before actually but most of the time the game wouldn't crash, it would just show that message and I would resume playing. It used to do that in Titanfall before but then it stopped and now it started again and does it every time I start the game up but it doesn't crash. However, with SLI now it does crash lol.

What do you mean by aggressive custom fan profile please? What exactly would it do for the card? It's already running at over 80% fan speed when it reaches 80 degrees. It doesn't go above 80 degreees though thankfully. Maybe it will after a few hours of play I dunno but my case has a big fan on the side panel pointed directly at the GPUs and I can turn that up might help a little. Need damn liquid nitrogen or atleast water cooling for these things lol.

I also received my 3D Vision 2 kit today so trying to figure out how to set that up now lol. It has 2 USB cables and some other cable not sure what goes where yet

Try using DDU to completely uninstall your drivers and then reinstall them afterwards. It may be that old drivers are still there and that could be causing a problem.

I recommend setting a custom fan profile. Use MSI Afterburner. Go to Settings > Fan and check User defined fan control, and then set a custom profile. I would personally set it something like this: once the cards hit 50C it should be at ~70% fan speed, 60C I would say 80%, 70C would be 90% fan speed and 80C would be 100% fan speed. I would try this and see what happens.

Ok thanks I will try the custom fan curve. I just deleted my driver and reinstalling now because for some reason the "Stereoscopic 3D" vanished from the control panel list of tabs lol. It was always there before when I didn't have any 3D hardware and now when I finally get it it decides to erase itself from the control panel.

Oh I also spoke to someone from Nvidia about the 3D thing and how to connect it and also asked about the top card. He said 80C is perfectly normal for the card in an SLI config. I will try the custom fan curve though, it makes sense since it will cool more faster. We'll see what happens.

Hello again. I tried the custom fan curve just now. I set it up the way you said and the cards, especially the top card were running cooler. It was only at 72 degrees where it would otherwise be at around 80. I have two questions though.

First of all I think that fan curve applied to both the top and bottom cards. Should I keep it that way or do I not need it for the bottom card? Although keeping the bottom card cooler would reflect on the top card. Also, is it even possible to set a different fan curve for them separately?

The second question is about the life expectancy of the fan. I read that a more aggresive fan curve will reduce the life of the fan. What do you think about this?

I don't think you can set a separate fan curve, unfortunately.

I wouldn't worry about the life of the fan. You aren't going to be running them at full speed all of the time, so they should last a long time. You'll see people who have run cards all day, every day for years and have no problem.
