i am planning to buy a GTX 970 around Christmas to wait for the price and supply to stabilise(i wonder if price will go up or down). currently looking at the MSI GTX 970 but i often heard about coil whine from it. is this problem wide spread? does it affect all GTX 970 or just MSI? and will it have coil whine right from the start or slowly develop over time?

Also anything up from AMD? is there any reasonable prediction on when they will release new GPU? 3 month? half a year?

There is always a chance for coil whine for any card. You won't know until you get the card and test it. If it hasn't got coil whine, it is unlikely to have it later on but test your card for stability.

R9 300 series may be released next year but no confirmed news of the specs. It may have a die shrink or it may not. If it wants to compete with Maxwell, I feel AMD would do a die shrink. Maxwell is currently 28nm. AMD may go to 20nm or they may stick with 28nm. Maxwell is skipping the 20nm i beleving to 16nm but it is still a long way off. It is still early to predict the performance with the current rumors/news we have now.
I doubt the prices of the GTX 970 will change. It will be up to the retailers whether they lower the price for a limited time to get competitions.

I got a 970 from Asus, but had to send it back because of coil whine. They tested the card there in their system though, and said they didn't hear any coil whine, so it can vary per system or components you use. I guess there's always a small chance of coil whine, and the chance is bigger with the high end cards than with the entry level cards. And a tiny coil whine I could live with but it was audible through my headphones even.
Decided I'm gonna wait until next year, and then I'll get a graphics card with the die shrink (probably Nvidia again), hopefully the problems with manufacturing enough chips will be solved soon. Till then I'm gaming on my Intel HD iGPU.

The EVGA model is the worst for coil whine. MSI and ASUS are suppose to be the best for the 900 series this time
