i5- 4690k and GTX 980 would give better frames in games.

i7 is waste of money for gaming, so i agree.

Is it purely for gaming - that could change the answer ^.
You have to realize that the 980 is not a huge amount faster - approx 15%.

How many more frames do you think I would get?

15% more frames than an 970 roughly. It's already going to be displaying more frames than your eyes can actually see most likely (120+), but the difference between the i5 and i7 in games would be like 1-2 frames at best probably.

Frames difference:

As for what option .... are you overclocking or running stock ?

4690k runs at 3.5 / 3.9 Ghz
4670k runs at 4.0 / 4.4 Ghz

That being said, in a gaming box, the 12% 980 advantage trumps the 4970k advantage by a significant margin
