Will an external SSD make my laptop run faster? Like just to put my OS on? This is just my laptop that I take on the run to do small gaming and web browsing. It's nothing special. I have my desktop for heavy gaming and all of that.
Unless you have an eSata connection and an eSata case for the SSD you won't get much benefit from it....
My suggestion would be to remove the hard drive and install the SSD to give you big bang for the buck on the OS. If you aren't installing much on the Laptop, a 120/128GB SSD should be plenty. Put the hard drive in an external enclosure for data files (i.e. documents, music, videos, pictures).

External SSD with the OS? No.
First, it is a real PITA to make a Windows OS run on an external drive
Second, you are pushing that through the USB interface.
If you want, replace the internal HDD with a new SSD.

Do I have to buy a certain propitiatory SSD for my laptop?
