I know my rig is old now but I believe it still has some power to run the most demanding games today so I'm planning to upgrade my GPU for now because I don't have the money to upgrade to 1150/2011 platform cause I'm still studying. so can my Q9550 handle a GTX 970 or even a GTX 980?

System Specs:
Intel Core2Quad Q9550 OC'ed to 4.0ghz
8GB Team Xtreem Dark 1066 ddr2
Asus P5Q SE Plus
1.0TB Western Digital Caviar Blue
Thermaltake 600w True Rated PSU
Cooler Master Hyper 212X
Antec 300 Chassis

If you could overclock your Q9550 to 4 GHz like PAUrawhore, you would even be able to buy a 980. Apart from that, your CPU should be fine with the 970 at stock clocks. I think you won't have problems maxing out most games, though in some you may experience a lower frame rate than if you had a faster CPU.

Buy the GTX 970, your CPU at that freq should handle it well. There will be some bottlenecks, but nothing bad. When you start to rise the settings (not necessarily the resolution) is when you could experience CPU bottlenecks. In some games more than others.

With that you will play at least at 1080p mid settings.

I wanted to send a private message to PAUrawhore but it wasnt working.
I am just curious since I have a Q9550 cpu too and i was considering gtx970 for 1920x1200 gaming. Have you made your purchase? What's your experience? To be honest i expect an almost all settings max out and 30+ fps with q9550 and gtx970 at 1080p

Go for the GTX 980. Your system will handle it at that clock.
