without it returning a BSOD error and causing a dump file. only way I can get it to turn off is if I put it to sleep, quickly wake and shutdown.

it seems to be caused by this 'thing' - atikmdag.sys judging by the dump file.

I am running a Toshiba A500 windows 7 64gb.

only happends on shutdown... any help?

atikmdag.sys is a component of the graphics driver.

Try installing latest graphics driver for your A500 from the Toshiba website which is appropriate for your region/country:
