I am new at setting up storage for our webserver (r810 win2008 R2). We just added a Dell MD1200 DAS with 12 x 600G HDs in the enclosure.

My IT staff set up 3 virtual disk of 3 drives. Each has an assigned hot swap disk. This gave us only 3T out of 7.2T total.

Is it necessary to assign an unused hotswap drive for each Raid 5 disk group? Could we set up 11 drives in Raid 5 and assign a single hotswap drive? Could we put all 12 drives in Raid 6 without any hotswap drive?

What would you all recommend?

Brian

You could use a global hot spare instead of one dedicated for each disk group, which would give you a little over an extra TB of total space, as the PERC H800 supports that also.

Your configuration really depends on your needs and I would discuss it at length with the IT guys, but personally I get uncomfortable with the idea of 11 drives in RAID 5.

Hello Brian,
With having 3 virtual disk that are created you can have just 1 global hotspare drive configured & it will cover in the event of a drive failure. Also as real beast stated as far as changing your raid setup that is a decision that you & your IT team will need to make as what is the best setup. Me personally I would not create a raid 5 of over 8 disks but that is just a personal preference.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hey dellsam_l, nice to see you here. And bbloom96 welcome to the forums. It's great to see companies support their products on alternative sites to their own support pages. And I'm a big Dell fan. :)
