hullo, so i've been looking for a good gaming laptop to buy, i want something good but atm i cant spend a ton.

I've been looking around for maybe some better laptops that are used, i found a asus ROG g45vw 14" on amazon, specs are i5 @ 2.5ghz, 8gb ram, 750 hdd, gtx 660m 2gb. It said something about the ram being upgraded to 16gb and the hdd being swapped to a 750gb ssd, but then at checkout it said i could pay for him to upgrade the ram before shipping, so i guess its just 8gb? other than that he said a few minor scratches and scuffs on the top and 1 long scratch on the button but no serious dents/cracks. Its windows 8, i heard 8.1 is better? is this a really big issue? its only $700 so i think thats a pretty good deal for those specs...

I would never pay 700 dollars for a used laptop unless it was a very serious gaming unit, which that is not, that was is pretty good, and unscratched, condition. For about another hundred bucks you can get a decent, and new, unit, with much better hardware than what that has. Of course, that probably depends on what country you're in as stuff is a lot more expensive in places outside the US.

I'm in the US, san diego CA.

tbh i haven't found any new laptops that are actually "gaming" laptops that have decent specs for under $950 which is the lenovo y50 which has a lot of negative review about the screen, cooling, and other issues.

Probably in 5-6 months i can buy a $2k laptop, i cant atm though so im trying to find something cheap.

I also found a used alienware 14" on ebay for $750, but so far this asus seems like the best deal. I've heard a lot of good things about them.

All "gaming" laptops have cooling issues. You just can't put a high end graphics adapter in a tiny compartment, along with a CPU that already uses mostly passive cooling since the fan is divorced from the area of the CPU, and not expect there to be heat issues unless you get one with a direct dual fan design and then you're talking bucks, obviously. I know a few people with the Y50 and they have had fewer issues than any of the people I know with MSI or Alienware gaming laptops. Just my 2cents. There are a few others out there too. Might just want to wait and save the money. Put it towards a really decent model.
