Hello,
I seem to be having issues with my Phenom II 965... Idle it runes about 37-38 degrees C but I try to run a video game, like Mass Effect 2, it shoots up beyond the maximum recommended temperature at around 62-63C.... I am using an arctic 64 cooler that I scrapped off of a broken system and used antec formula 7 paste... Cleaned it like usual, so I do not see what could've gone wrong.... Any reason why that would happen?

Picture of HWMonitor running with Prime95 showing the absurd temperature reading of 67C...

After running Prime 95, 3 minutes later... 39C is not too bad...

Thanks

Isopropyl Alcohol, minimum 90% I assume. Do you feel or see the effects of the heat? I have an Arctic Cool 64... on my AM2 (6400+ BE 3.2 or something, fastest dual core AM2 the have/had). Runs so cool it makes me jealous that I can't pull off those temps on my 965.
The fan seems to be screaming RPMs at u so that isn't broken. Could you have damaged something else, like cracked a heat pipe? I assume it's seated properly, tight fan and contact, with the right bracket and backing? Also that you're confident about the thermal paste?
and just in case, is the arctic cool 64 am3+ compatible? Cuz if it is, I may salvage mine for my frankenstein computer squad to put on the 965 :)
Oh I just remembered, the fan is attached by rubber pegs into rubber holes in flippers kinda, right? Easy to stretch/tear. Maybe check those out.
Also, I can't see your voltages. Could you have accidentally messed with something in your BIOS, like voltages etc. You could always try reseting everything to safe defaults, turn on Cool n' Quiet, run it and eliminate that possibility.

The flippers are a bit cracked... but the fans still seem to run okay... I did not have 90% alcohol around but i used acetone, so could the Acetone used to clean the old past be the reason why its acting so funny?

Very possibly. Hit it with some CRC QD Electronics cleaner if u have/can get it (like $3). It's old, you may need to hand sand and polish (no chems) the base plate. Def scrub it with a q-tip and 99% Isopropyl, that's what I do. Use the lint free cloth on the second or third pass, depending if the q-tip stays white lol. Ruined a couple lint free cloths before I thought of that :)

And take a good look at the hard to see parts, I'm thinking cell phone light and camera zoom, look for cracks in the pipes, especially joints/soldered junctions. Whatever is going on, it seems to be heat build-up, not immediate failure. So it's likely not a glaringly obvious problem.

Last of all, tho it's unlikely, you could try a different fan or two if you have spares, just to see if those cracked fins are seriously reducing the airflow.

Also if you don't have them, google for Isopropyl alcohol and lint free cloth substitutes. To be honest, in the AM2 days, a dry q-tip at the end was my lint free cloth lol, not that I'm saying that that's a good idea ;)  Hehe, I used the word "that" 3 times in the space of 9 words.

lol I think I may be better off buying a new cooler. did some digging on Arctic's website and found out that the cooler I have is not recommended for my CPU as it can only handle a TDP of 90W and the CPU is 125W TDP

Did u check the stuff? or were u too busy playing video games?!

Yes I did, found the clamp was a bit bent, causing the paste and pressure to not distibute itself freely... problem solved once the new cooler master comes in

I love it when a plan comes together ;)

Well got the TX3, and things seem to be running a LOT smoother at 32C idle and 44-45C under load which makes me a happy camper! Ran Prime95 for 15 minutes and it peaked at 51C so I think I am good to go now!

I'm happy you're a happy camper. And I don't care how much alcohol you've had, don't try to fight the bear (personal experience lol).

Give it a proper prime test. Just to be on the safe side. Otherwise, congrats on not melting stuff you didn't want melted, and good look melting everything else... everything else...blow torches r fun
