My brother's HP laptop is broken and unfortunately he doesn't have any repair discs to restore windows. The computer is unable to auto recover and requires repair media.

So far I've been following this tutorial to copy an ISO onto a USB drive.

The ISO that I'm using is the Windows 8 Enterprise trial. I heard that it would allow recovery to take place.

I've changed the USB drive to be first upon booting but there isn't a "press any key to continue" for booting off of USB. Instead the computer hangs on the HP logo screen for a long time and there's a timer effect underneath. If I'm patient enough the entire screen turns black and nothing else happens.

Edit: I tried using the USB on my Desktop and found it worked. I simply went into the ASUS uefi and changed the boot to uefi usb.

There's probably something I'm not understanding about the HP.

Sounds more to me like a BIOS (or is it UEFI) issue with the machine than a Windows issue.

Can you try booting the USB drive in another machine? If it works there, then the problem is in the lower-level workings of the laptop. If it has the same result there, then your USB device is not really bootable. It's a quick test.

You can also contact HP for restoration media for whatever model of PC you have. Note that all of your data will be lost.

I noticed that by disabling secure boot and use a DVD in legacy mode that I can get the window 8 logo to take the place of the HP logo. However the same black screen occurs after.
