I have a Sony Vaio SVE15124CXS laptop. It currently has (stock) an Intel i3-3110M chip in it now. (Ivy Bridge). I would like a confirmation that the i7-3720QM chip ( also Ivy Bridge) will work in the same motherboard. I figured they would since they are both Ivy Bridge, but I have been unable to figure out if the motherboard in this laptop is suited for socket set FCPGA 988, whic his the only socket set the two chips have in common. Anybody able to help me on this?

Swapping a laptop CPU isn't the same as swapping a desktop one. Matching the socket is one thing, but you also need to consider how the more powerful i7 is going to be cooled and what impact the extra heat will have. If the laptop was originally offered with the choice of an i7 processor, then it should be fine, but otherwise, you're taking a big risk. I'm not saying the laptop will catch fire, but you may irreversibly damage other components.

Yes I have thought about that as well. I keep this hard drive on a VERY cold fan at all time. and Ive never broken 30 degrees Celsius. I'm not too worried about it over heating, I was just more concerned on whether or not it would FIT. I dont really want to spend $400 and have to return it.

Yea i did notice that both chips supported that socket, just wanted to make usre that hightened the chances of it fitting in the mb, but its gonna be a little while before i do the swap. thanks for the info. and i will definitely check up more on the cooling and other compatibility issues. Thanks again.
