Can someone tell me another MB (exact model #, please) that I should buy that will accept my existing Chips and Memory from my old computer HP Pavilion P6228P-B with a bad MB M2N78-LA.

Also after I install the new MB it will be using my old Hard Drive that still has the original win 7 OS installed. Will I be able to install the new Box version of Win 7 over top of the original Win 7 and same my data on the HD?

Thanks,

Solution
Best solution is just to replace the motherboard with another M2N78-LA. This way, you don't need to re-install windows or your applications. Assuming that this system is no longer under warranty, changing to another motherboard will require you to do a complete re-install of the OS. You'll have to save your data to another location and format your OS drive.

Now that I'm looking, they're available, but the prices are outrageous ($150-$250). You may be better off with some other motherboard and just accept that you will need to do a new install of the OS and all your programs. Understand that this may also require that you purchase a new OS license.

yea, that is what I keep finding. $100 for OS plus $50/$80 bucks for MB and I will be half way to a new system.

OK let me ask you this, If I put in a new MB (different from orginal) and buy a new box Window 7. Can I install it on my old HD over top of the old version of window 7 and save all my data without formatting the HD?

Thanks Wolf for your time,

No. If you install Windows 7 on top of your current install, you will have to format. You would need to back up your data to another location. Note installed programs would need to be reinstalled, but data files would just need to be saves somewhere else.
