i want a modest gaming rig that can be somewhat portable and was wondering can i get by with an i3-4150 or should i spend the 70 dollars or so more on an i5-4440?

I must say that i5 is the smarter way because those 70$ worth it really. So if you can buy it then buy it for sure.

Get what you can afford. Honestly, the 4150 is really a great CPU for gaming. As long as the GPU isnt anything past the 770 or the 280x you are fine for bottleneck. What is your build budget out of curiosity?

Depends on what you can afford and what GPU you intend to use.
