Hi all,

I have a Radeon 4870x2 graphic card with dual DVI output. I´m using two original DVI to HDMI converters that enables sound as well. I then have one HDMI cable going to my desktop monitor which has built in speakers and the another HDMI is connected to my Samsung TV. I´m running windows 7 64bit.

The problem I have is that I´m not able to get audio output on both desktop screen and TV as long as both cables are connected at the same time. They both work fine separatley. Picture also works fine when both are connected at the same time.

Is there any settings that I need to change or is this a limitation in the graphic audio card?

Could this be a OS limitation?

I only see one AMD HDMI Output icon in the sound settings in the Control Panel.

I believe the limitation is with Windows 7 to play multiple or in your case two playback destinations simultaneously.

Under sound>playback devises, is there two audio sources listed for your Monitor and TV?. If so you should be able to toggle between them but not at the same time with Windows detecting differences. Not entirly sure what would happen if you had two identical monitors/tvs, probably list them both separately.

The problem is that I only have one audio device listed in Windows. If I had two devices then there could be some tricks to get the audio on both as you say. I have two video devices so logically I should get two audio devices or?
Could it be that it will always be one audio device but that graphic card should then route the sound to both destinations?
I don´t see how the destination monitor/tv can play a roll in this.

I appreciate the help .

I'm not sure sorry if you should be getting two audio devices since its one sound chip, i can see where you're coming from. Just checking to see if Windows7 was detecting like ie Samsung-TV and another as Monitor.

Have a look what happens in audio devices when you toggle displays, is there a different named description in audio devices?

Its probably as you say only one output can source sound, just very hard to find evidence of it.

Is there a particular reason you wanted sound from both displays? because If it doesn't work out the way you want, then maybe there's another idea with an AV receiver since they commonly have HDMI out's for video pass through, unlike pc speakers with just analog, you could take advantage of sound that way. Just a thought, or even use Pc speakers from onboard sound?

I tried switching cables with the same outcome. I also tried to put my Samsung TV as primary screen but in all cases I get sound only from the PC monitor which I find strange. So when both cables are connected in any way I get sound only through the PC monitor speakers. I don´t understand this priority of the PC monitor and how this is done.

I want to use speakers in the monitor for when I want some kind of sound when I´m sitting at the desk (news, youtube etc.)
Then I want to use my Samsung TV for when I´m watching movies. I don´t need to have sound on both at the same time meaning that toggling between them would be fine but not if I have to do it physically meaning pull in/out cable. I would like to do it in windows somehow.
I have an AV receiver but it would be alot of hassle to have another cable going back from AV received to the PC.
I also want to utilize the speakers in the PC monitor since I paid for it.
