I was wondering, if I were to have 2-3 980's or 970's in SLI, what Haswell-E Processor would be the best? I want to go with 5820k but I am worried about the reduced PCI-E lanes and how that would cope with 2-3 Way SLI.
If you are going to go 2 way SLI you can get away with the 5820K because it has 28 PCI lanes but you will only be using 16x/8x pci lanes leaving 4 extra. If your motherboard can support 16/16 or 16/16/16 and you think it will make a difference then I would move up in chips to take advantage of the extra capacity. All reports show very little to no change from going from 8x to 16x PCI so it may not be worth it unless you are going with 3 way SLI.
There are more than enough PCIe lanes for 2-way SLI. In fact you should be OK on the LGA 1150 motherboards for 2-way SLI and save a bundle on the motherboard and processor.
