So around $2,600 is the budget. A 4k capable system would be awesome, and I think it'd be possible.
What i've been looking at-

Case- NZXT Phantom 410 Series CA-PH410-B1
Cooler- Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan
Motherboard- ASUS MAXIMUS VII FORMULA
PSU- CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91
GPU- MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5
RAM- G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
CPU- Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz
HDD- WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
SSD- SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB
Optical Drive- ASUS Black Blu-ray Drive SATA Model BC-12B1ST/BLK/B/AS – OEM

Mid sized tower should work well. I personally like the way the 410 looks.

Should I go 6-core (4930k) and x79 (Asus Deluxe)? Probably would overclock it- would also help prepare for future games

16gb and 750W should be enough.
Water cooling, or a good fan? (like a Noctua d15)
Of course, the graphics card(s) are important- double up on something like 780 ti's, 980's, or 290x's?

Thanks for any help!

Im going to throw this build out there due to some other builds not making much sense. Like using 1tb Blues/Cudas. Or Zotac GPUs (Cheapest 980 available) And I pray that someone did not say that P2s were not good. I'm going to pretend I didn't read that

With 2 GTX 980 GPUs 4K will be fantastic, you will get 60FPS max settings on 4K.

For $2600 I would have at the least
4930k/5930k (money permitting) 4790k at the least
a good x99 mobo (money permitting) whatever Z97 mobo
16gb of ram
a 240-250gb sandisk extreme 2 or samsung 850 pro main drive
a 500gb 840 evo storage/game drive (money permitting)
a 1tb caviar blue or black for storage and backup
1-2 EVGA ACX or ASUS DCII 980s
EVGA SuperNova G2 850W+ PSU

Something else to think about is that if you stick with z97 and a 4790k, some mobos have on board PCIe SSD slots that accept an M2 form factor SSD. Theyre almost twice as fast as a standard ssd.

I could care less about the case. Ill mock this up in pcpart picker if I get a chance.

My bottom lines for that kind of money:
1. Get better GPUs over CPUs, the LGA 1150 socket still has life in it, you only really need socket 2011 if youre doing tri SLI for the PCI pipelines. 4790k is plenty for 2 GPUs.

2. Anything more than 16gb of ram is a waste for gaming for now and the near future, just get good fast ram like corsair dominator or something.

3. The EVGA SuperNova G2 is one of the best PSUs on the market now and has the best ripple suppression of any PSU out there, the only psu that can touch its voltage regulation is the Corsair AXi series, and theyre unreliable. The EVGA has a 10 year Warranty and is based on the Super Flower Leadex Platform which is one of the best PSUs out on the market, but very hard to find.

Why? The high cost of DDR4 just isn't worth it right now. I want X99 for my rig but I've been putting it off because of the high cost of DDR4. You also don't need the i7, 16GB of RAM, or the BD-ROM drive to get a proper gaming experience. The PSU is a good choice, though - the G2s and P2s are indeed the best money can buy right now. Try something like this:

I dont think the p2 series is nearly as good, but I havent seen too much about them. If I have 2 high end GPUs like 980s im getting a 4790k. Going with 16gb for a new build is the right choice since you should always match your ram if possible by keeping it from the same lot. You may not need it now, but you can grow into it when games become 64bit and start eating more ram.

If your not gonna overclock to much you really dont need water cooling. Went with 5930k for the extra cores and more lanes. I think someday games will use em.
