A £3k max gaming build?

Hello all,

With my current pc being quite old now and broken I am considering doing a major upgrade. I've not really been keeping up with the current computer tech so I thought I'd post my build on here to see how bad I got it and hopefully get some improvements.

What it needs to do:

  • ■ It needs to be as future proof as it can be for the next 4-5 years
    ■ It needs to be able to run games at max ideally (games like the new battlefields, star citizen etc)
    ■ I would like to do triple monitor in either 5760x1080 or maybe try and have 3x http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-070-AS&groupid=17&catid=948 if that's even possible to run games with such high resolution over 3 monitors?
    ■ Good for overclocking if needed

The build:
I have around £3000 budget for this, £3200 at my utter maximum but ideally less than 3k is better lol. (not including monitors ) Using pcpartpicker I've come up with 2 rough drafts
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Venrith/saved/GV3WGX
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Venrith/saved/ZMnXsY

The thing is now I've been doing more research I'm hearing that 4 core processor's are better for gaming and something like twin 980's are better for the money. I would like to stick with
nvidia but I guess not set in stone, I will also have cpu watercooling but probably not gpu (unless I figure out how to) for overclocking

Anyway any help or advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

What I would suggest is that X99 isn't really worth it for gaming especially with the high cost of DDR4 right now it isn't really justifiable. The Titan Blacks are a good option if you're going for 1440P or 4K or higher. I definitely agree with coops1 about dropping the sound card. I would also not go with the Thermaltake Level 10 - there's much better cases out there, and same with Corsair RM PSUs.

Maybe try something like this:

I see what you mean by the x99 and ddr4, although it makes future upgrading more expensive when ddr4 is more worth it, but by then I'm guessing alot of things will be out of date lol.

I'm still torn between the 980s and the titans (seems to be mixed opinions on this) , I guess I need to seriously decide if I just want 3 1080x1920 monitors or 3 1440p ones

Titan blacks are a waste of money. This would be better.

If you research the benchmarks out there, there's almost zero difference in performance between the i7-4790K - i7-5930K - i7-5820K. I would personally go with the cheaper CPU and spend more on the graphics. Depends on what monitor resolution you plan to run. Dual 980s will handle 1440P and 1080P fine, but might struggle a bit on 4K.

Titan blacks are a waste of money. This would be better.

So is the 5930K, when the 5820K is cheaper and overclocks the same.

I really wouldn't go with Titan blacks. From a gaming point of view, they are essentially a 780ti with 6GB VRAM. Since the 980 outperforms a 780ti, I would either buy 2 4GB 980s now (especially if you are playing in lower res) or wait for the release of the 8GB 980 version if you need the extra VRAM.

I would also definitely go X99 in a 3K build. The performance difference between the i7 5820k and 4790k is minimal in most games, but the extra cores will help in the future. Also, having DDR4 & x99 is awesome just for bragging rights, and if you have 3K to spend - why not?

I would essentially take transmaniacons build and slot in the cheaper i7 5820k, with the only loss being the you will need to use x16/x8 sli opposed to x16/x16, which will not hurt performance at all, and possibly a tiny bit of OC headroom (due to binning best CPU for higher cost i7).

At the end of the day though, only you can decide if its worth it. Once you get past about £1500 on a gaming PC, diminishing returns really kick in. An i7 4790k + SLI 970 will perform fine in 4K for half the price of your build. You have to ask yourself if it would be better to spend less now & upgrade slightly sooner or go all out in the hope of a bit more longevity.

I chose 5930k, so there would be no possible PCI-E lane issues running 3x SLI.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I've been doing some more research (not as easy on a tablet.. Miss my pc lol) I've found that most gfx cards would really struggle to handle 3x 1440p monitors so I would be better going with 3x1080 or 1200p monitors which would make the cheaper 980's be a better option. Titans probably do seem a little pointless unless I was going to go with 4k. Would the 4gb of vram on them really limit me in a few years time though compared to the titans 6gb?

There is that, but I just can't get past the ridiculous overcosting of DDR4 to recommend splurging on X99 at this point in time. Perhaps when Sky Lake is available and DDR4 is widely available and drops to where the masses can afford it I will start recommending it, but until then no dice.

Yet you chose crazy expensive graphics cards. My 5930k build, with its expensive ddr4, was still cheaper than that dual titan black build. I would venture to say 3x GTX 970 would be equal to, if not a bit faster than 2 titan blacks, considering 2x 970 isn't all that much different, in peformance, than a titan z, even when 4k resolution is used.

Not necessarily, no matter which way you look at it £2500 is £2500.

Yeah you could make that argument for performance with the 970 vs. Titan comparison but the X factor would be the use of 4K or not. I would think the extra VRAM would come in handy on 4K, would it not?
