Hi there please forgive me if i haven't put this in the right section as i need a solution fast

Every so often i get a strange type of burning smell coming from my PC i really can't describe i ran downstairs thinking it was gas as my son is here but it wasn't it is coming out my PC :-S

i have checked HW monitor for temps and the CPU is in its 30s with the hyper 212 Evo all fans are functioning there are no sparks or strange noises everything in device manager is fine the system has been overclocked for months and has been fine so my guess its the PSU as it randomly shutdown about a week ago and took several attempts for it to function again

The PSU is Powercool 1050 watt 80+ and is nearly 4 years old everything is connected fine just checked it

I need an answer before i shut down the PC if possible as it may not boot up again if its PSU related i don't have a spare PSU if it goes tits up so finding the problem is very important as i would be gutted if my new 8320 and Asus m5a97 R2 Evo went up in smoke

Thanks in advance :-)

Joe

Hmm strange i definitely added enough thermal compound to the CPU temps have always been ok its screwed down fine as i thought maybe it had come loose with vibrations ect the highest i have seen my CPU go was in its mid 50s when i was rendering HD Video files in Sony Vegas 13 the GPU looks ok but i rearly can't tell is there a programme i can download to test for hardware failures could the smell be the PSU capacitors burning out i'm not sure thanks :-)

Try and sniff the PSU exhaust and see if you can pick up the smell. I'm betting that's it.... I am sure you don't need 1000 watts ... what GFX cards you have in there. A quality 10 year warranty 750 watter wud cost ya $75 on newegg EVGA G2

My best bet would be PSU too. However if you're lucky maybe, just maybe, its some clump of dust that found its way into a hot part of your hardware and sizzled away.

Whatever it is you'd probably be better served getting a new PSU, the PSU is the one component of your PC that you least want to go no name cheap on.
