I've got 2 computers running windows 8.1. A home PC and a laptop for college. My home PC rarely seems to get any updates from windows update, however my laptop seems to have never ending updates to install, and this is annoying as I can's shut down the laptop without installing them, but I have limited internet and battery life to be able to install them. Is there any reason my laptop has more updates?

You probably have the home PC set to download and install automatically in the background so you just don't see it happening.

However you can look in Windows Update at the log of all the installed updates and compare the two to see if one is getting more (or less) than its fair share

You shouldn't have an infinite amount of updates. Eventually, they will stop if they are downloading/installing correctly. If you are annoyed when shutting down the PC and it does updates, you can by pass it by shutting down the machine via the command prompt. Open up a command prompt, and type in "shutdown /s", and after a minute it will shut down without doing any Windows updates.

An alternative is too set it manually in the control panel.
