My screen randomly goes black and I I have to reboot it to fix it

I have an HP pavilion windows vista and while I'm working the screen will go black , & if u put a bright light up to the screen you can sometimes see what you are working on and the mouse so I can restart it.
Does anyone have ideas on how I might can fix it so I can at leas back up my pics & videos ?

Use an external monitor or another monitor to get your files backed up. It sounds like your display is having a backlight issue.

Please keep in mind that important files should always have a backup copy made as soon as possible. HDD's and SSD's can and do die without warning and 25 cent dvd's are a whole lot cheaper than sending a drive out for data recovery.
