No Win8 Audio Driver for my Mobo -- workaround?

I upgraded my desktop to Win 8 earlier this year (I'm currently running 8.1.1). Lately I've been running into an issue where my front microphone jack is not recognized -- a headset plugged into it will not give input. Output works just fine, which makes this especially puzzling. The best educated guesses on the source of the problem is either the connection to the front of the case -- which looks unlikely if output works since they're on the same cable -- or an issue with the audio driver.

My motherboard is an Asus P7P55D. It is an older mobo (I've had my computer since at least early 2012), and the ASUS support site does not have a Win8 updated driver for it. In the setup I have, the "recording devices" menu lists one speaker set (which presumably switches from rear-jack speakers to front-jack headphones when the latter are plugged in) but two microphone HD devices, one of which is listed as "unavailable".

If the driver for inboard sound actually is the issue, is there a workaround on the software side that will make the front jack "pick up"? And could someone please point me to it if there is?
