Is there a fail safe way to update BIOS for a MSI board? I posted on MSI's own forum yesterday as they have a warning that "updating BIOS is done at users own risk" so all I asked was on the forum, "will I be out $150.00 if I correctly update my BIOS using the correct method and it still bricks the board".

Instead of answering my question, MSI forum just deleted it. Isn't that really dishonest of them to sell boards and then tell you if you update the bios and it fails, tough luck? How do these guys get away with such tactics??? I'm a first time builder and have now two MSI boards, but this sure is a disappointed how they went about it.

This is true for any BIOS upgrade for any motherboard manufacturer not just MSI.

Any BIOS update is done on your own risk. If it fails, you are out off luck.

A lot of boards have two bios chips now so that if one fails you can use the other. Might want to get one of those if you are that worried.

But if you are careful and select the right one, you'll be fine. I've done this before, never bricked one yet. Just make SURE you have the right board.

Thanks to both of you for the help, I wasn't aware that bricking the board is not covered for BIOS updates.
Hopefully I have a good board 4745454b. It's a MSI Z97 U3 Plus. Not sure the USB 3.0 issues have anything to do with BIOS though. Sometimes they work and are real fast and then back to much to slow.

Is there a bios update that says it's fixes USB issues?

- Improved USB keyboard compatibility
- Improved M-Flash USB pen drive compatibility

Above is what they say for USB but nothing about improving or correcting speed issues.

look here at toms at all the msi bios flash issues -- msi knows they got a problem there and would like to hide that fact

yep, that is why I am hesitant to do it. I guess I should have purchased a board with dual bios, but I didn't think about that the first or second time around.

still if your flashing tools suck it won't matter how many bios chips you got on a board

I was only kidding, really. When I read customer support reviews of asus, I get turned off immediately. So, in your own experience, which board manufacture do you like if I may ask and what would be a good $150 all around board in your opinion?

Many people really seem to like asrock. I was thinking the same thing about if I get a lemon or not. Except for the USB 3.0 issue which I'm not sure what it is yet, the msi board is blazing fast with the ssd so I can't really complain otherwise. People keep asking me to build something for them so I want to try one of the asrock boards and see how it goes. Thanks for the help junkeymoney.

Thanks! After reading many user reviews of many boards, it almost is the luck of the draw sometimes. Today I will finish my second build and I'm hoping all the components are good. I had a little bad luck with the first build as MSI board had very loose heat sinks so I decided to rma it just in case more things were going on with it that I couldn't see. The way it was packaged too almost looked used anyway, so I'm glad I sent it back.

What are you using that has "speed" issues?

High Speed SD card transferring images on an Orico USB 3.0 SD card reader as well as Orica 3.5" Bay SD reader. It seems most of the time but confusingly not all the time, all USB 3.0 ports whether on the front case, or rear I/O panel are not any faster than 2.0 speed. Is there a decent malware free benchmark utility that I could use to check speeds? I'm only checking SD to SDD transfer speed as I just upload a lot of images to my PC. Sometimes I would get the full SSD speed and then it's ten times slower again, so somewhere there seems to be an issue.

I have 840 Pro SSD, 16 gig RAM, i5-4690 running on an MSI Z97 U3 Plus

Do High Speed SD cards work faster then 40MBps? I didn't think any of those work at USB3 speeds. Try using an external hdd, one that can read or write at faster then 40MBps.

You can try this for speed testing.

Several times I copied from SD to samsung SSD and it went at full speed of almost 500MB/s then other times really slow. Copying from SDD to SD is of course much slower due to the card speed so I wasn't worried about that. Thanks for the link, I'll give it a try!
