when I put the sata port into it before boot it freezes my computer, when in windows it freezes my whole computer and I can't look into the drives or format it. Tried using the windows disk and command prompt. If anyone has any ideas its very appreciated, its a 4+year old 1tb seagate hard drive.

Hi there awesomedude911,

I would also agree that connecting the drive through USB may work for you.
Given the fact it is four years old and it is causing this issues, I would suggest you to run a brand specific testing tool after you format it and see the overall health of the drive. This way you will decide whether it is a reliable storage space for storing your data.
