1920x1080 vs 2560x1440 monitor for my build?

Hey guys,

I'm putting together a computer soon which I'm aiming to be very high end. In specific it has a GTX 980 on the x99-gaming 5 gigabyte motherboard. Primarily this computer is used for a combination of gaming and work (Concept art in photoshop) and i've been wondering about what monitor size i should be getting for the best performance in games. I'm extremely used to 1080p for working so its not a huge issue on the work aspect.

Checking some benchmarks i found around to try and inform my decision, i found the GTX 980 handles 1440p at a minimum of above 40fps for pretty much anything on the highest settings. While at 1080p it breaks 60fps for absolutely everything even at it's minimum rate. (Bit-tech had a 57 fps average and 42 minimum for BF4 at 1440p, vs 66 minimum and 87 average at 1080p)

Is this drop in FPS worth it for the higher resolution? Having never had a high end system before, let alone one that is capable of getting anywhere near 60 fps i honestly don't have any experience with high frame rates and how they look, for the most part my games are "i hit 25 fps on the lowest settings, score!"

I only intend to have a single monitor for gaming

How much would an overclock on the GPU help this as well? I'd love to overclock it and get a bit more out of it FPS-wise.

Thanks!

What kinds of games are you going to be playing? If you're only going to be playing FPS games (i.e. BF, CS, COD), then a TN panel would be good, but if you're going to be playing a mix of games, then get the IPS type panel. My guess is that your eyes probably aren't super sensitive to the difference between a 2ms and 6ms response time for a monitor, in which case you should just go with an IPS for the better colors (and resolution in this instance). Also, photoshop looks noticeably better using an IPS type monitor.

Things do look a lot better at 1440p vs 1080p at the highest settings. As long as you're hitting above 30fps, you probably won't even notice any sort of lag while gaming.
