How to setup one graphics card per monitor properly

Hi. I just got two brand new monitors and I have a NVIDIA 680 and a ATI Radeon HD 7870 in my computer. I have each of these monitors connecting to one display port on the cards.

The Nvidia is my primary, and it seems right now that the ATI card is not doing anything but just giving the output signal and that all of the processing is being slammed onto the Nvidia card, and it simply can't handle both monitors.

I am using Windows 7 and was hoping somone could help me to try and figure out how to make ATI do all the graphics processing for the second card, or is what I am trying to do impossible.
Same question being asked for 2 Nvidia cards (I ordered a 980 but it's not here yet [want to pop out 7870 and replace with the 980 and keep the 680 also]).

Thanks

I do not think that is possible. If you want to use both monitors, you have to use one card. Or one card with SLI or CrossFire.

Now when your 980 comes, you can let go of the 7870 and just use the GTX 680 and the GTX 980.

You can use the GTX 680 as a PhysX card. That will actually help your GTX 980 with PhysX enabled games.
