Does anyone run this GPU in a case like Silverstone FT02/RV02? I know that blower-type cards are strongly recommended for that orientation but really like this card over the reference and wonder how hot it might get.

Solution
Should work a little better vertical. At least the exhaust grid will be on the top. As long as you move the air out of the case an axial gpu cooler is fine.

The problem with non-reference GPUs in vertical orientation is not airflow but heatpipes. If those are positioned lower than the heat source, the cooling liquid inside of them can't climb back up to the heat, thanks to the gravity. Here's a webarchive of the article - http://web.archive.org/web/20120121042329/http://en.expreview.com/2010/11/15/90%C2%B0-rotationhow-to-install-heatpipe-cooler/11843.html (the original doesn't exits already).

That would be the end of story if not numerous positive feedbacks in the past regarding using non-reference GPUs in this kind of cases. Unfortunately, lots of negative ones too, so I'm trying to gather info about this particular combo.

Finished the build (i7 5820k, Noctua Nh-D15, Asus x99 deluxe, 16gb 2666 ram, Asus gtx980 Strix, Samsung 850pro 256gb, Silverstone FT02). The GPU stays at 40'-44' / 0% fan in idle and 70'-75' / 50% fan during 3dmarks and heavy gaming at 1440p@ultra (and hardly audible while at it; however setting the GPU's fans manually at 60% increases noise greatly, at 80%+ it turns into intolerable shriek). Guess I won't risk overclocking but at stock it seems pretty viable.

Honestly, there are so many sounds that I can't tell something special at 0:33 :) Don't think I heard any clicks or any non-uniform sounds from mine. I'll try to upload mine but no earlier than on Tuesday - I've had to return faulty RAM (2 modules of my G.Skill 4x4 kit were DOA) and now waiting for a new kit.

Here is the promised video

0:00 - idle; fans speed 0%, temp 40'C
0:15 - 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark has started
0:22 - GPU temp reaches 65'C, fans start spinning
1:00 - GPU load 100%, fans speed 45%, temp 70'C; there it stays during whole run
1:45 - aborted the benchmark; idle, temps and fans' speed start falling
2:40 - temp 45', fans stopped
