My pc is connected to internet via a wireless usb adapter. I also have a wireless xbox 360 controller for pc and the receiver is always plugged into usb as well. Can that interfere if the controller is powered off? I tried doing a bunch of speed tests with the receiver plugged in, not plugged in and the turning the controller on and off in the middle but didn't notice any spikes or differences. I know that's not a very scientific method of attacking this questions but wasn't sure how else to check.

I am also considering getting a wireless headset and am worried that might interfere with my internet signal.

I was having a ton of issues about a year ago with interference but I've seen replaced my router and it's gotten better. I did figure out my child's baby monitor was killing the internet in my house! Other than that I sometimes just get a crappy signal, like 1 mbps when it should be 15-20. Usually I log onto my router and adjust the channel it's on and it then works fine. I think maybe the neighbors have something going on cus sometimes I can see their mifi devices. I've also tested this out with my laptop. Without changing the channel I'll put my lapto right next to my router and it's always blazing fast. So I'm pretty sure there is some sort of interference with my desktop (although it's only ~20 feet away).

It seems I'm getting interference at times and I don't want to exacerbate the issue with another wireless device. I'd also like to nail down some of the sources.

Could be just a weak adapter/router? Consider installing wifi repeaters.
If your house power routing is good you can consider a powerline adapter.
Or just get a long Ethernet cable. Nothing beats that.

Physical objects like walls between your PC and router will weaken wifi signal strength.

So you don't think my wireless peripherals have anything to do with it? I shouldn't worry about a wireless headset?

Yes but only if they operate on the same frequency band as your router wifi.

Your network should be on 2.4Ghz. Most Bluetooth devices are also on 2.4Ghz although they are not as regulated and may use other frequencies.
