So im looking at either a MSI 990FXA-GD65 OR a Asus M5A99X EVO, im guessing people will say the Asus, but the MSI has a 6 pin going straight to the pci lanes, which im guessing provides better overclocking? or gives some sort of advantage, and it looks interesting, not sure myself if it makes a difference, but hopefully someone can fill me in on that!
Ive heard good things about both boards, but the main reason im wanting a new one is due to overclocking potential, and my ASRock Extreme3 apparently wont even touch an oc as the VRMs just instantly overheat, and the power phase design is 4+1 which isnt enough for the 8320, and im also having boot issues, which ive decided to blame on the motherboard so i have another reason to get one.... ;)
But yeah, help me out as im not too familiar with motherboards as im more a GPU person!

The MSI is fine. It has an 8+2 power phase design.

I had the msi board and never noticed any benefit from the extra 6 pin connector but it was a decent motherboard but i did blow it up so like always be careful.

I was overclocking an fx 8350 and set the vcore for 1.53 and a little puff of smoke and a weird smell later the chip and the mobo were done.

990FXA-GD65: 8+2 Heatsinked.
M5A99X EVO: Digi VRM 6+2 Heatsinked w/ throttling Protection.

imho Asus M5A99X EVO.

coolcole01 that sounds clever, well done with that ;)  but i suppose it is the risk with overclocking, hopefully i dont do that, knowing my luck, ill get the board and i will blow it up hahaha
And filippi, wouldnt the 8+2 on the msi be better for overclocking?

When overclocking, throttling should be disabled anyway, and you 'manually' check your VRM temps by looking at the socket temperature. Throttling protection is not THAT important if you know what you're doing.

awesome, thanks Nightantilli, and also, what programs do you recommend for checking socket temps?

Another quick question to anyone that knows, what are the differences between rev 1.0 and 2.0 on the M5A99X evo, just because ive saw a one on ebay and it dosent say which revision it is, or if there is a serial number difference

Checking the Thermal Margin with AMD OverDrive is generally considered the best approach. Although HWInfo or HWMonitor also do the job well enough.
