SCCM Image Deployment Issues

I work for the local school district, and we're using Server 2012 SCCM to push out 8.1 images to laptops. Most of the installs have gone through, but we keep encountering errors with either the task sequence failing mid-install or the selected boot device not found once install manages to finish.

The laptops that are having these issues are Hitachi drives, whereas the working ones are all Seagates. I've tried reformatting them, changing the drive letter (most have Windows on the D drive instead of C for some reason) and cleaning/verifying from command prompt. So far, nothing has worked.

If we use the original 8 disc, it loads up fine but obviously takes longer and comes with no updates. The second our server's image is installed on these Hitachi drives, they say they can't access the OS. I've tried installing from the PXE after installing 8 fresh, hoping that the setup would resolve the drive letter issue, but no cigar.

Not sure where to go from here - the only thing that seems odd at this point is the fact that one laptop took the image but still wouldn't boot, giving me an error stating Windows couldn't load because the drive is locked. I ran a command (chkdsk /f plus a couple more modifiers) that was supposed to check the disk for errors and then unlock it, but it's still throwing the same error.

Any advice? I'm stuck. I'm not the sysadmin, who has been out for a week. If the issue is in the server, the best I can guess is that it's got something to do with the fact that these drives have Windows installed on D or E instead of C, maybe it's confusing the server? I just am out of ideas, have been t/sing the drives for the past few days.

edit: been working on these last 10 laptops for several days. The image is working on the other 300 laptops, and after doing just about everything from the client side, the only thing that stands out is that each of these problem systems have Hitachi (ATA HTS72501) hard drives. They all boot into 7, which loads the initial setup, if you let them boot into the HDD, and they take 8.1 on a disc, but not from our server. We have several 8/8.1 image files to choose from on the task sequence, and none of them, not even the 7 images, work. Beginning to think it's a driver issue, because I've done everything possible to t/s the drive itself AFAIK.

Would greatly appreciate any help!!
