Building a Gaming PC

Hey guys, I'm new here and I'm not really that well educated when it comes to customizing a gaming PC but I've always wanted one. I'm planning on building it around my Sapphire Dual-X r9 280x. I also have a Antec 550 PSU which, I know, needs to be upgraded to at least 750 watts.

I was wondering what kind of components, from PSU to CPU and everything in between, should I need that not only will benefit me from current high-end games but will also put up a fight for future games? The budget would roughly be around $750 or less since I already have a GPU.

I5 4690K paired with a Z97 board or for no overclocking i5 4690 paired with a H97 board, 2X4gb set of memory, 650 Watt power supply, Seasonic, XFX, Rosewell Capstone, or EVGA G2 series to name a few good brands.

This is a little bit more but the 970 is a better card though if you really want the 280x then go with Brunostako's build, also if you want to cut the budget a bit you could drop down to an i3 but I would much highly recommend the i5 over doing this.

So much to choose from but as I was comparing the 970 & 280x, 970 is obviously better but at the same time, a little more expensive than I would like. In addition, I've got the 280x on a bargain price which is why I want to build around it. As for the CPU, I'm already thinking about going with the i5-4690 since I'm not really planning on overclocking at all.

Yeah, don't bother with OC.

You won't notice the difference between the 4690 and 4460.

Understood. Thanks. But as for the video card, I realized that 970 is superior over the 280x but wouldn't the 280x do just as fine in regards to gaming on high settings?

Yes, the GTX 970 is very superior to the 280X and also consumes less energy. In my build i just didn't put it because you said you already had a GPU.

But if you still can return it (or sell it), buy the GTX 970. The Haswell i5s can handle any single GPU and some dual GPU.

Since the price for the GTX970 is a little too much for me, would there be a big drawback if I choose to spend less on other components? Basically like a downgrade from everything just a tad bit. I'm trying to compensate my budget somehow.

no the other parts of the build are perfectly fine and you dont need a 750w psu. Jaytwocents had an overclocked 3770k and two 680's running on a 650w psu so 600w is perfect for your build as it leaves a good bit of leg room for upgrades. The 280x is a great card and if you dont want to spend that much on the gpu then get it and put an ssd in there also with the 750 budget does that need to include the price of the gpu?

I'm kind of reluctant but I'd say yes that the 750 budget does include the GPU. I've spent $135 to get the 280x which I think is a good deal which is why I'm having second thoughts of returning it and getting the 970 in its full price.

you know what keep the 280x it's fine for 1080p and will max out pretty much all games just get a more premium psu and a nice ssd maybe 240gb.

Hey everyone,

So I made a custom build based on what you guys have proposed and I have came up with this. Please let me know if this works for a starter.

Yes, don't worry to much.

The R9 280X can even do 1440p mid settings at some games.

NEVER go cheap on the PSU, is much more important than you think. I learned that the bad way.

did you want to cut down the price because I really would step up to an i5 if you can but everything else seems pretty good.

No, I was just comparing the 4460 that Brunostako used to the fx-6300 and based on what I've read, the 6300 is superior a tad bit. I guess I don't know much how powerful the I5 is compare to any other processor.

Where did you see the FX 6300 is superior to the i5-4460? That's way too far from reality.

nope fx 8320 is slightly better at video editting cause of extra cores but i5 is way supperier in gaming.

That's true.

Everything where more processing threads do help is where the FX 8 core can shine. Gaming is not one of them.

I'm sorry, I thought this case was closed but I just have two more questions, what's the use of the SSD? Should I still buy it if, let's say in the future, I buy a powerful GPU?

The SSD is for your OS and applications. SSDs are much faster than HDD so it makes the system feel more fluent, but for gaming is not really necessary. You can omit it if you want.

The core i5s can handle bigger GPUs, so that's not a problem.
