Hi.
Right now I have a AMD FX-6300 (Oc'd to 4.2) with a Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 Ghz Edition. Sometime soon in the future i'm thinking about crossfiring my 7870 with a R9 270x. I'll have to buy a new motherboard and power supply as well, but for now I'd like to know if anyone has an answer to my question. Will my FX-6300 bottleneck my crossfire? If it will, how much would it?

It depends on the game, but in most cases, yes, it's a budget-mainstream CPU combined with a high-end Crossfire.

What is your current system specs, your monitor's resolution, and your budget? It may be better to go with a new single card, or to go another direction entirely.

Also, while it's possible to CF those 2 cards, the 270X will be slowed down to the speed of the 7870. For what it's worth.

Right now I have 8GBs of Ram, Radeon HD 7870, AMD FX-6300, Asus 1920x1080 IPS display, and I have my parts in a Fractal Design Arc Midi R2. Right now i'm not sure about my budget. I'm open to ideas, but I would got no more than $300 and I'd like it to be $250 or under.

What PSU are you using now? I'd sell the 7870 (if you can), and pick up an MSI GTX 970 ($349), or Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 ($299). The R9 uses more power though, and may need a new PSU.

That way you don't have any CF issues, (not all games support it well), heat, space, or power issues, and won't need a new PSU. You'd also have 4GB of VRAM vs 2GB from that CF setup (VRAM doesn't stack with 2 cards).

Plus, if you build a new PC down the road, you have the option of grabbing a 2nd high-end card, for a high performance build.

Otherwise, I'd just save up some money and use what you have. The GTX 960 should be announced soon, and be around the $250 mark.

I'll look around at my options a bit more. I might just stick with my current build for now. Anyways thanks for the help! I appreciate it! Update: Oh and my PSU is a Corsair CX500.

Ok, you may be able to skirt by with a R9 290 with that PSU, but it's close. A 970 should definitely work.

(PS. Please select a solution if this resolves your issue. Thanks!)

FX processors do not seem to scale well with multi GPU set ups .
It is not about raw horsepower . But they still do not work that well

IMO sell the 7870 and buy 1 card thats better . You wont have to buy a mb which will save you $80- 100 anyway so you might be able to afford a GTX 970 or something close to that .
