I am planning to upgrade my PC. It is used by my brother. He is a 3D modeler in VFX industry. Current specs are:
CPU: i7-2600,
mobo: Intel woodworth DH61WW(1pci, 1pci-ex1,1pciex16,4 sata2 ports),
RAM: (4gb x 2 =)8gb ddr3 sdram 1333Mhz,
Graphic card: NVIDIA Quadro 2000(1GB, GDDR5)
I will be keeping the graphic card. Should I also keep my CPU or should I change it? I ask this since its a sandy-bridge one & so I don't know whether will it be future proof as new octa core Haswell desktop cpu is already out & also, nowadays xeons are being used in rendering rigs by increasing no. of people.:??:
He uses MAYA, ZBrush, Photoshop.
By future proof, I intend to keep the new sys atleast 5 yrs from now.
Please help me.
Thanks.:)

2600 is good. Depends on your budget. If you want to hang on to the PC for at least 5 years, you may want to toss down some cash for 4790k and new motherboard and be done with it.

I'd suggest giving him an SSD for photoshop, maya and zbrush though. The Quadro 2000 should be good as you said.

I'd keep in mind that the CPU, MB and even memory probably go hand in hand. If you want to replace one of them, then you need to grab the whole package and replace them.

I bet you could replace all for 500-600 bucks and have a machine that should last 5 years or more easily.

Core i7 4790k
ASUS Z97 board
Some low cost Corsair memory (2x 8GB) around 1600MHz or more.

The only thing that might be really be worth upgrading to in his case is an Haswell-E (LGA2011-3) CPU like the i7-5820k. If budget is not too much of a concern, you might even want to consider the i7-5960X.

Thanks to both for the replies. I have decided to change the cpu & was able to convince my brother for that:lol: .
cirdecus I am already considering samsung 850 pro 128 or 256 gb ssd + wd black 1tb hard disk. Again thanks for mentioning it.
I saw the benchmarks of i7 5960x and was impressed with it. But budget is a big constraint. So mostly I would be going for i7 5930k or 5820k.
But, is it worth the price difference of approx 220$ to go for 5930k over 5820k?

Unless you plan to do triple/quad-CF/SLI, absolutely want x16x16 dual-GPU or plan to use many high-speed add-in boards, the extra PCIe lanes will not make much of a difference.

The 5820k is a fine choice for most people who just want an hex-core Intel CPU without the full high-end price tag.
