My first own PC build, using the Asus Z87-Pro, a
Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" SDD, and a Seagate Desktop 2TB HDD.

Built my machine and so far everything worked ok. BIOS came up, all fans spinning, both hard disks recognized. I configured the SSD to be booted off first and installed Windows 8.1 Pro on the SSD. The installation worked, but there is one very annoying problem:

Whenever I either reset using the reset button or try to reboot Windows trough the OS itself, the monitor just goes black. The blue light on the monitor goes from shining to blinking, so I assume the monitor doesn't get any input anymore. The PC keeps running (fans spinning, mobo lights on, etc), but the monitor goes black and never comes back. I have to do a force-shutdown and start the computer again from scratch. Then Windows boots again. Reset and reboot never work.

I unplugged the HDD and changed the SATA port of the SSD on the motherboard, to see if this helps. To no avail.

What could be the problem and how could I troubleshoot this?

Edit: I wanted to add that it doesn't seem to matter if the SSD or the HDD is connected. I can cold-start and enter the BIOS, then pick "Save and reset" and have the same effect. The mobo just seems to not be able to handle a reboot at all, regardless of which disk is connected where.

Edit 2: There's no GPU installed. I run a HDMI cable directly from the motherboard to the monitor.

recheck all the wires from the PC front panel to the motherboard.

No mention of your PSU brand or model, which leads me to believe that, like most first time builders, you may possibly have overlooked the importance of a high quality PSU. (80plus rating does not automatically equal high quality). Since the PSU is extremely important to the various power states, including the OS initiated reboot sequence, it's possible that a poor quality PSU could either contribute, or be responsible for, this issue.

I would double check your connections as Karsten75 suggested but in the meantime let us know the specs on the PSU as well.

Sure, here's the full list of components that I used:

- CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K BOX LGA 1150, 4th Gen
- Mainboard: ASUS Z87 PRO LGA 1150 ATX
- PSU: Corsair AX760 (760W)
- Case: Fractal Define R4 - Black Pearl
- CPU Fan: Noctua NH-D14 (120mm)
- Ram: HyperX Fury Black (2x, 8GB, DDR3-1600, DIMM 240)
- HDD: Seagate Desktop 2000GB, 3.5",
- SSD: Samsung 840 EVO Basic 500GB
- Optical Drive: Samsung DVD-ROM SH-118BB/BEBE
- GPU: Currently just on-board graphics. No GPU installed.

Regarding the cables: I have disconnected SSD, HDD, DVD and the front-buttons (reset/power on/off) and have been using the mainboard power button to start into the BIOS and try resetting from there. I have the same problem this way so I don't think it's related to the SATA devices at all. I did this to see if there is some sort of short circuit or similar with those buttons.

The PSU should be a good one I reckon. Certainly it wasn't cheap.

The problem is fixed. Turns out one has to run a BIOS update to run a 4th gen Intel processor on this motherboard.

Here is the upgrade guide: http://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1006767/

One hint was the CPU LED on the motherboard that was lit after every failed reboot, but never while cold-starting.

Thanks for your help guys.

Yep, that's a good PSU and also Yep, you hit the nail on the head, which we could have told you if you had provided system specs in the original post. Glad you got it figured out though. Good luck to you.
