GTX 980 /w 650w PSU?

I'm going to be upgrading my GTX 660 at some point, and I think it's time I finally go all the way with getting a powerful GPU this gen.

However, the required wattage for the GPU (Which is 500) bothers me a little bit. Currently I have a Corsair TX650w PSU, which, btw, is around 4-5 years old, and has held up well with my constant upgrades so far.

I don't plan to overclock or SLI in the future until I get a better PSU, but I'm just asking: Will a single GTX980 (without OCing) be able to run on this PSU? These are my specs:

MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R 2.0
GPU: EVGA GTX 660 3GB Edition
CPU: AMD FX 6350 6 Core 3.9GHz
PSU: Corsair TX650w
RAM: 8x2(16) GB Team Elite 1600mHz Dual Channel

Solution
GTX660 is rated at 140W stock, GTX970 is rated at 165W, GTX980 is rated at 185W. So not too much of an increase. Just need to make sure you have a pair of 6-pin PCIe connectors.

My PSU comes with only 1 6-pin, unfortunately. Most cards will come with an adapter to connect two psu cables into a 6-pin, right? If I recall, anyway.

Yeah, but you shouldn't use them. TX650W from that era doesn't have the best reputation.

Why wouldn't it? The thing lasted for 4-5 years, and it was used previously to power a EVGA GTX 560 Ti. What do I have to fear?

Are you sure? Isn't the TX range the non modular version of the original HX series?

Why wouldn't I use an adapter with it? It's not going to catch on fire or something, is it?

I'm still using adapters on my 660's just like I did with the 560's and it's the same PSU.

Just a pre-caution against power supplies that weren't intended for running things that require more then one PCIe connector.

Generally you want your supply cables to match what you are intending to do. They intended the rest of the power to run the system, drives, and peripherals. No danger as long as you stay under the maximum power rating on the 12V rail, but extra stress increases temperatures, will cause the fan to spin faster/louder.

If you are really running SLI 660s on that supply, it won't last as long as it was intended to. That is above the recommended 80% load a supply should be run at.

You mean to say that my 8 year old HX620 that has run SLi'd 7900GT's, 8800GT's, 560Ti's and that is now running SLi'd 660Ti's is not going to last? Are you really sure because the evidence would suggest otherwise IMO.

Average time between failures isn't exact. Every part meets specifications, results may vary. It might last another 5 years (though I am surprised the fan is still working unless you don't run it often) Also an HX620 can't be directly compared to a more recent TX650, Corsair has switched OEMs a few times since they started selling power supplies.

Yours is made by Seasonic, a top rated supplier. TX650 is made my Channel Well, still a decent OEM, but not as good as Seasonic.

If by that you mean 24/7 365 running F@H then yes. :sarcastic:
