I am currently running Windows 7 on a HDD but it is pretty buggy, lots of BSOD etc. I have lots of important programs and plug-ins installed and would be an absoluuuute last resort to have to re-install them.
So I am thinking, get an SSD to install Windows 8 or Windows 10 when it comes out, then just use that to boot the OS and use my HDD to run programs plugins etc or would it not work? Would it still be just as buggy as now?

Really stuck on what to do as the current Windows 7 OS might have corrupt system files

More about : run ssd programs plug ins hdd

You can't just install a new version of windows on an SSD and have it work with your old windows 7 programs/files. You would need to reinstall all your programs for your new OS or do a clean install of Windows 7. Have you tried repairing windows 7 to see if you can fix these possibly corrupt system files?

It looks at the moment like that is the only solution, but this is the problem when I really need these programs & plug-ins. I have indeed, doesn't work.

Your "absoluuuute last resort" is actually the best path to follow.

Your current install is "pretty buggy, lots of BSOD".
Clean install on the new SSD (good option), and install your applications. Your 'pretty buggy, lots of BSOD' may also be the result of bad application installations.
'Might be'....

Running applications from a previous install is usually not a good idea.

Ok, well it looks like i'm going to have to do this sometime. Problem is, so far I have filled up 267GB on my C drive which is separate to documents, music and general files. Does that mean i'll need a big SSD or can I choose which programs to install on SSD and which to install on my HDD?

Each application can be installed wherever you need it. Some on the SSD, some on the HDD.
