I have a lenovo y410p laptop, and I sometimes use linux on some of my other computers. I wanted to dual boot linux and windows 8 on this laptop. However, I don't want to void the warranty on this laptop (especially since it has had hardware issues in the past).

My question is: can I dual boot linux on this laptop without vioiding the warranty (assuming I get rid of it before I want to send it back to lenovo)? I understand that they won't be covering any issues caused by linux

Make sure you have prepared Recovery DVD (or Recovery USB) media so you can restore your laptop to "out-of-the-box" condition whenever you want to send it back.

Installing Linux (and dual-booting with Windows) is no different on Lenovo laptops than on any other computer, and does not void warranty (ready it anyway). However, Lenovo will not help you resolve technical issues with Linux.

Sounds like what I expected, just wanted to make sure, thank you.

And one more question: The recovery media for this laptop is installed on a separate partition that I can normally boot into by pressing the "OneKey" button. Do you know if installing Linux will affect this in any way? (as in, will that partition not work unless I restore to Windows' bootloader, or will it show up in GRUB like another OS entry might)

It depends how you install Linux. That's the reason you need separate Recovery media available (with which you can restore the HDD the way it was shipped). This varies between manufacturers - my Asus' recovery created 16GB USB key, and I was able to replace the HDD with similar one, and have it prepared in the same way.

Your Lenovo' HDD is most probably partitioned with GPT and BIOS is in UEFI mode. Check around how to make dual-boot in this configuration.

Your warranty will not be voided unless they see that something is damaged inside the laptop (hardware). Ofcourse if some something brakes naturaly and there are no signs that you broke it they will fix it.
