So, I've had a custom rig since about last year, solid rig, maxes all the game I play at 60fps. It had no problem whatsoever with heat issues, running music, Steam, voice chat, and a game at the same time. Just yesterday, I was playing Borderlands 2, and it shut off due to CPU overheating. Never happened before. I was running music, Steam, and Borderlands at the same time. I turned my computer back on, give it a while, try playing again, turns off with 10 minutes. I decided to try it out lower settings on an easier-to-run game, League of Legends. Turned off after 4 minutes. With nothing but my browser and CPUID, the program that checks my CPU heat, I have 64 degrees celsius, very slowly dropping. I have ruled out that dust is the problem, I just cleaned out my case this Saturday. Specs below:
Asus M5A97 Le R2 Motherboard
Amd Radeon R9 270X Graphics Card
Western Digital 1TB Blue Hard Drive
A Rosewill 600W PSU
G. Skill Sniper Series Ram 8GB 1877Mhz
Stock CPU Fan
Stock Case Fan
Any ideas?

If when only your browser and CPUID is running and your CPU is at 64c, you will definitely need a new cooler. Seems like there's a problem with the stock one as they are designed to provide sufficient cooling at stock clocks. If you can fit an CM Hyper 212 Evo in your case, I'd definitely pick one up :

That's what I was thinking as well. Do you think a stock fan could start working so shoddily all of the sudden though?

Temperatures do depend on your circumstances aswell. Do you have a decent airflow? Are your ambient temperatures high? Whatever it is, 64C idling is definitely too high and not normal. If the fan on the stock cooler is spinning, that means it should be working. Just to be certain, is it plugged to the CPU fan header on your motherboard? That way it'll be temperature controlled by the motherboard.

Airflow is fine, it's cold in my room, the fan is spinning, plugged into the header. I accidently picked your answer as the solution, but you already helped! Thanks a bunch.

Haha gotcha, I'm pretty sure your CPU fan is either defective or just not adequate to cool the CPU. The 212 Evo does a great job at cooling at a budget. Got my FX-6300 at 4.4Ghz with 51C under prime95(stress program, 100% CPU usage)

(btw I can unselect the solution :p  )

That's my exact processor, the most important spec I forgot to list!
It'll take a while to order the fan and receive it, but your deduction has certainly helped!

Could always try a fresh coat of thermal paste if you know how much to apply. Though as mentioned, probably best to just get a new cooler. Though this could help isolate the issue to the heatsink itself.
